3239. A leisurely drive

It was a quiet day in the Sunshine Retirement Village community lounge; just the four of them – Kitty, Ena, Meredith, and Rex.

“I may have lived in this town for over forty years,” said Ena, “but I’ve never driven to the top of Mount Bennett.”

Mount Bennett was the highest peak in the mountain range and was driveable. None had been to the top except for Rex. He had a car and volunteered to drive.

“I know the way,” said Rex, “and there are a lot of side roads. It’s easy to get lost. But the view is worth the effort.”

Off they set. The road was winding and in places quite steep. They had been going half an hour and had about quarter of an hour before they reached the top. Suddenly Rex stopped the car. “I think I’m having a heart attack,” he said.

Luckily Rex had his phone on him. An ambulance was called. It arrived quicker than they thought it would, thank goodness. In no time the ambulance headed for the hospital. “Take care ladies,” said the attending medic. “The road at this time of year can be pretty rough and deserted.”

Well, all three could drive. Meredith volunteered. But Rex had left in the ambulance with the phone. And the car keys.
