3238. Baby sparrows

Sparrows were building a nest behind a bucket on a shelf in Celine’s garage. They had been busy building for a week at least. Probably there were eggs already laid. Celine didn’t like to disturb the nest. She might frighten them off.

Every year she had let the sparrows nest in her garage. It was always a short, quick nesting season. The baby sparrows would be out of the nest before you could blink. Ever since her daughter had gone missing Celine never had much company. They sparrows kind of filled a gap. It was an interest that took her mind off her missing daughter.

Well she remembered that terrible night when her daughter disappeared from the house and never returned. Even if they had found a body it wouldn’t be a comfort, but at least it could be a relief of sorts. Luckily Celine had found a photo of her daughter wearing exactly what she was wearing when she went missing: a bright red knitted sweater and a plaid skirt. Celine had knitted that sweater herself. Despite searches not a trace had even been found.

New life in the garage, albeit in a sparrow’s nest, gave Celine a little hope. After the fledglings had flown Celine would clear away the nest. And when she did…

Intertwined among the dried grass and nesting straw were some bright red threads of wool.
