3237. Exotic fruit

Mrs Nyla Reeves was into trying exotic fruit from the market. She’d always been very humdrum when it came to eating fruit: apples, peaches, pears, plums, bananas, oranges…

Suddenly she was bringing home fruit she had never eaten before in her sheltered upbringing: feijoas, kiwis, dragon fruit, guavas, durian, lychees… If it was in the market stalls Nyla would come home with a paper bag full.

He husband thought she was mad. It was a waste of money. He’d always been negative – about everything. Even on their honeymoon many moons ago he did nothing but complain. These days he was insufferable. Moan moan moan. In fact, Nyla referred to the honeymoon as the honeymoan.

That didn’t stop Nyla’s pursuit of happiness in exotic fruit. In the end she selected durians. A durian had a strong smell but the creamy, custardy taste would be a taste her husband would never forget. The durian would suit her purpose.

The poison was no trouble. Getting her husband to eat the thing was the real challenge.
