Sharon loved her grandmother. Of course she did! It was very sad indeed when Sharon’s grandmother died. Sharon reflected on the many times she had stayed with her grandmother. Grandma was a wonderful cook. Just wonderful! When Sharon stayed with her grandmother they used to cook together nearly all weekend.

These days Sharon was all grown up and married with a family of her own. When her grandma died Sharon was sad but excited: she inherited grandma’s handwritten recipes. A pile of recipes held together with a rubber band. Sharon thought she would pay tribute to her grandmother by quietly cooking her way over time through the pile.

The first recipe she thought she would try was the one for a Christmas fruit cake. Sharon remembered it. Was it delicious or what?

Oh! What a disappointment. Here is the recipe: Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add flour and handfuls of fruit and nuts and two teaspoons of spice. Bake about 4 hours. Best made months before Christmas.

How much of each ingredient? What were the spices? How many eggs? Sharon went ahead with the fruit cake any way. It turned out beautiful. It was then Sharon realized something: it was a delight to have Grandma’s stack of notes as a memento. But Grandma had already taught her how to cook everything in the pile.
