3263. Walking in the dark

Maxwell prided himself at being able to walk around his house in the dark without needing to turn a light on. “If I ever go blind,” he would say, “I’d be able to find my way around. Easy-peasy.”

Supposing he needed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. He would feel the corridor wall with the back of his hand as he walked along. When the wall stopped he knew to turn right and head for the bathroom door. It was only a few steps. Habit had taught him the height of the bathroom door handle. He would simply reach out and touch it.

Last night, when he reached out to touch it… ugh…When he reached out last night he didn’t realize it would be the last thing he would ever do.
