3257. On rainy days

It was just another rainy day. Ursula wished she had never taken her annual vacation in the middle of winter. There was very little to do other than go to the library and read. She needed a new interest; something to enthuse over.

When asked for ideas the assistant librarian asked if she had ever investigated her family tree. What a great idea, thought Ursula. The library’s genealogy section was a veritable feast, as was the online information. Ursula quickly grew her family tree. Oh my goodness me! Soon she learnt that she was descended from Charlemagne. Charlemagne! Of course, it was so far back that probably his genes running through her bloodline were rather diluted. But still, it was exciting. She needed no further incentive to leap out of bed on the rainy mornings and pursue her new interest.

Now she had a motive to research the life of Charlemagne. Great-great-something Grandpa Charlemagne! That study filled in the last week of her vacation. It wasn’t until the final day that she read something by the famous Charlemagne historian, Bogdan Shelley-Stroud: Despite having two legal wives they bore Charlemagne no children. Ursula had spent her vacation barking up the wrong tree.
